iPod hell...

wicky

play thing
My iPod crashed (in the way that ALL electrical equip. does from time to time) on the way to work this morning. I dunno, perhaps it just didn't like the track I was playing.

Anyway, It completely locked up. I couldn't press stop, because there isn't a stop button; I couldn't flip the battery out, because there isn't a cover. So, I sat there with my £400 bit of useless plastic in hand wondering why I was wearing headphones.... nice design, not.

Does anybody know a way to force reboot an iPod when you're on the move, or has Apple's sensational design team missed out some pretty essential functionality?

There is a stop button. And a power off one as well.

If your iPod doesn't respond, is "frozen", or won't turn on, check for these possible causes:
The Hold switch may be on. Check the Hold switch to make sure it's not in the locked position. Unlock it, and try using iPod again.

Tip: Even if the Hold switch is already in the unlocked position, it's sometimes helpful to toggle it so it's locked and back again.
Your iPod may need to be reset. Plug it into a power source, then press and hold both the Menu and Play/Pause buttons for about 10 seconds. (For an iPod mini, hold the Menu and Select buttons instead.) Resetting your iPod does not affect your music or data files.

Your iPod's battery may not be charged. Plug your iPod in, wait for a moment, press a button to turn it on, and check the screen.

You see a folder icon with an exclamation point
Some iPod models require a specific or later version of iPod software. Try updating or restoring iPod.

Here and you can download the manual here.

Nope, still sensational.

Sadly, you're mistaken... I've tried all of this, but no joy! Actually, as it turns out I reckon it's dead, but thanks for the help anyway.

You could let it sit for a month without charging, until the battery is FULLY discharged and any RAM settings are cleared, then re-connect it.

Just a thought.

yup.... but no.

I reckon I'll stamp my feet, throw my toys out of the pram, and get the nice people at Apple to make it all better. =)

Well, as a last resort, you could check over at ipodlounge to see if there's any other fixes. And while it may not have helped your iPod, there are stop and reset options for the iPod.

Sounds familiar. I bought a new 3G iPod last June. After the first few days' use, it became a bore: unresponsive buttons, random power-downs despite fully charged. In the end, it was just unresponsive, full-stop.

Resetting worked for me a few times, but I was forced to do it almost every day it became a pain. you could try reinstalling iPod software. First download the latest version from the Apple website, then launch program once iPod is plugged into your computer.

It will wipe everything you had on it previously, and start with a freshly formatted disk. My iPod has been problem-free ever since
