iPod Nano 4gb Brand New - Dead?

Hello, I do hope someone can help...

Today I recieved my new iPod nano 4gb (black if it makes a difference) as a replacement for my squashed 40gb one (don't ask)

Anyway, let me start with my system configuration and the current situation.

iPod 4gb Nano
MSX 10.3.9 (with java update as recommended by Apple)

It is currently updating in iTunes but I already know this will be a fruitless endeavour.

What happened?

Well I plugged in my iPod nano when prompted by the installer. Was dismayed to see it was formatted for Windows so tried to select Restore. This was only available with firewire according to installer. Plugged in the firewire lead - not supported on this mac.

Then iTunes fired up and registered my details (I figured this may be ok) Then disaster. My USB port became unplugged and I am stuck with the old 'file/exclamation mark' screen of death.

I have deleted all software (and extentions I think) and tried to restore but still do not get the option.

Is there anything I can do? I feel a total lemon taking it back after one day.

Many thanks in advance.

*update* Finished updating... file and exclamation mark again
