Ipod not being recognized on macbook

Hi, I just got the new ipod nano for christmas. When I connect the ipod using the usb wire that comes with the ipod to my macbook the macbook does not recognize anything being connected to it. When I go into Itunes it does not have an ipod section, this explains the computer has no idea that there is an ipod connected to it. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Does the iPod have the charging icon? If it's empty, it may take a while (up to half an hour) to get enough charge to get it recognized.
If it still will not show (even in system profiler or finder), try the other USB ports (directly, with no hubs and if you can without other USB devices attached), and reset PRAM if none of them still show it.
And make sure you have at least the required updates to use that model of iPod (seen on the package).
