iPod only plays purchased music while on dock

Hello everyone. I hope this isn’t one of those problems that happens to only one person… me.

First the tech specs: Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4. Mac OS X 10.3.9. Fourth-generation iPod, 40 GB. iTunes 7.0.1.

Now, this is the part I can’t figure out. When I play my iPod while it’s on the charger dock it plays all my songs. Both those imported from CD and those purchased from iTunes. But, when I take it off the dock (fully charged) it will only play the songs imported from CD. It skips right over the iTunes music. It makes no sense to me. All suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Heh, I misunderstood the thread title and thought it wouldn't play self-ripped music while on dock. ;) ... Either way: It seems to be some kind of problem with the DRM, probably. Can you totally reset the iPod, i.e. re-upgrade the firmware? It'll sure take a while to copy all the songs to the iPod again, but well... Might be worth a try.

Thanks… that did the trick! firmware flash and re-uploaded the songs (while I slept) and I’m good to go.

"While you slept"? :) ... I just got my new 80 GB iPod, and transferring my roughly 20 GB of music took about 30 minutes IIRC. I don't like to start processes like that before I go to sleep, because Murphy's Law says that the process usually fails as soon as your sleep is deep enough to ignore the error beep. :p ... Glad it worked, of course. :)
