iPod question about moving MP3s

Barking at the moon.
Right now I use a 20 gig FireWire harddrive for backing up apps and files and songs. It doesn't get used much, unless I am reinstalling my iBook. I usually transfer over my 3+ gigs of MP3s and it works nicely ... copying them all in just a minute or two.

What I would really like is an iPod. Now here's my thing, I can easily burn the apps and files onto CDRWs or ZIP disks, but with the 3+ gigs of MP3s that's more of a pain in the ass. If I had an iPod and I kept all my music synced on it, would I be able to transfer all those MP3s back to my Mac after a format?

While I'm at it, let me ask another question. Since my iBook has the weak 10 gig harddrive, my MP3 collection is essentially using 1/3 of my drive space. Thats not too cool. Can I play MP3's that are stored on an iPod through iTunes on my Mac? If I could just keep them stored on one harddrive instead of both that would help clean things up as well..

The way I do it: Keep the iPod synced and if I need to use it for a FW HD that I wanna pull something off of, I delete some synced songs and just drag my music over, it works as a FW HD.

The way you want to do it would require a program for showing hidden folders. TinkerTool might do the job.
Apple decided to hide all synced music to prevent massive pirating, but if you can see the hidden folders, nothing is stopping you from getting it all back.

And, yes, when the iPod is connected to iTunes you can play the music directly. It's like having a second library, however, you'll need iTunes 2.0.3 if you plan to play the playlists off the iPod.

Is that enough for you?

Thats exactly what I wanted to hear. Thanks man!

BTW, you are quite the Mac addict, aren't you? Look at all those computers you have yourself... :D

I'm a Mac addict, but in all honesty, I must admit, 1 of those Macs(the new iMac) belongs to my father and the lesser iMac to my little brother, but I have 100% access to them, use them all the time and if any problems pop up, I'm the troubleshooter...so technically they aren't mine, i didn't pay for them, but in reality, they belong to me.

But yeah, I'm quite the addict...we have a Performa around as well, but it isn't used...

The hidden 'Music' folder on the iPod stores the MP3s in a funny way, with odd filesnames etc, and it'll take you ages to re-organise them.
Your best bet for grabbing the MP3s back off is a program like Podmaster or Podestal (available on versiontracker). I keep a copy of Podestal on my iPod so that I can move MP3s to other machines easily. It's only really small (40something K). Podmaster is bigger, but works under OS9 as well....
