Hi,
this is my first post, didn't know where to put it, and it's a bit long winded, but bear with me if you can.
I'm a, lets say mature Mac user, not much knowledge, but like what I have and happy not to change.
Along comes apple with an email, I need to replace my 1st gen ipod as it may have a problem, okay send it off, get a replacement, very nice but I wanted just a new battery in the old one, I liked it. Problem is, I can't use it as my macbook pro, it is an old system, don't laugh, but again, it works for me, it's on
10.4.11 and the itunes that I use on it is also old, 9.2.1.
So, the only way I can use this lovely new present is to update my itunes, but no my laptop system is too old!
So I look for an update that my laptop will take, but can't find one, apple don't support them now.
So to use this ipod, I would have to get snow leopard, then Lion, or buy
lion and get someone to do a complete upgrade as I can't do it myself, this is going to cost me probably around 150.00 STERLING for a product that I had to change because it might have caught my house alight.

If anyone knows where I can get an update for itunes that will work on my old mac, please tell me, before I throw the ipod through the window. Or give me an email contact for apple where someone will read it, not a machine.

I said it was long, sorry for the rant, but, I like my old system, probably would take awhile to learn to use Lion and I can't afford it, it took a long time for a friend to pursued me to switch to Mac, I love it, but he's not around to help me now. Rant over, thanks if anyone can help.

Briefly, you should post the DETAILED specifications of your Macbook Pro AND your new iPod. The reason is a Guru can determine whether or not your computer can upgrade to the appropriate version, or what version, and all of that.

First things first . . . back up your data--music--if you have not. Best way to do that is with an external HD and a cloning program. I use SuperDuper! which costs $ but many HERE recommend the free program Carbon Copy Cloner? Why? So if anything gets frelled up you can simply boot off your external HD and have it "fix" your internal HD by cloning you back. Seriously. The WORSE thing that can happen is in the process of trying upgrades and "fixes" you wipe yourself out!

Second and long story short, according to MacTracker the EARLIEST MacBook Pro from May 2006 came with 10.4.5 BUT will take the MAXIMUM OS of 10.6.8. That be Snow Leopard. MacBook Pros from ~2007 can take Lion.

So . . . Snow Leopard is not very expensive: HERE. Upgrade to THAT and you should be very happy!

But let the Gurus know exactly what you have. There may be other recommendations.

Thanks for your reply,

these are what I'm working on

Macbook pro 10.4.11

Present itunes 9.2.1

replaced ipod nano 6th generation 8gb

I have a larger ipod classic with 80gb but liked my little old ipod 1st generation, both were being used on the old itunes. as I only have one computer.

Anyway as I understand it, when I plugged the new one into my computer it said I need a newer version itunes, went looking for it, every time I downloaded a version it came up saying it wouldn't work with what I have, I need snow leapord and/or Lion.

The cost here in the uk isn't huge, but I would have to pay someone to do it, as I said I am useless at that sort of thing, I just use and enjoy, how it gets in the machine is another matter.
If I could have found a newer version of itunes to download, that would be easy, but to change an operating system is too daunting.

Just thought someone might know a source of an itunes that would download on what I already have, but that's too easy I suppose.

So if anyone has any ideas, other than binning the ipod, it would be appreciated,
