iPod shuffle - my first major problem with the hardware

When I first used it, the iPod shuffle was seen by my Powerbook without any problem.

However, I've now found that I have to insert and remove the device several times before it gets seen (I don't think the fit to the (USB1.1) port is close enough) and it only seems to be getting worse.

Anyone else experiencing this problem?

We got our iPod Shuffle on Friday, and I got a USB extension cable Saturday morning. It is working just great with my iMac/350.

There was a tech note on Apple's site about the issue Thursday (that was when I saw it), so I was aware that I might need the cable before I actually bought our iPod Shuffle.

I still don't get it - it's a USB port. How can the iPod shuffle be the wrong width for these computers and yet still work (supposedly) in the USB ports of other computers? :(

I've got a Ti Powerbook with USB1.1 ports. It'll work if I spend several minutes or so jiggling the thing around in the port, but this is seems to be really poor manufacturing and not something I expect from Apple.

I am suspicious that you may actually have a loose conection in your iPod. The "compatibility" problem is not a compatibility problem at all. The problem is that the housings around many USB ports were not designed for something to be plugged up against them flush. They are recessed and will still take a USB cable fine.

Now, I have not seen the shuffle in person but if you are able to get it all the way into the USB port on the back of your TiBook you should be OK. If it is mated properly and you still cannot get it to work then something is broken somewhere.

The iPod shuffle was sitting flush against the PB port.

In any case, it doesn't make a difference (for me) anymore.

I just remembered that I actually had a USB extension cable sitting in a box (from a USB drive that I previously owned). The iPod shuffle works perfectly when plugged into that, so I'm happy (again). :D
