iPod Touch(16GB) with 9.44GB of "other."

Last night I plugged in my iPod to charge- I have a long day of walking ahead of me- and when I came back to it this morning, all the blue (music) on the sync bar at the bottom of the screen was gone. There was a sliver of yellow (photos), a small chunk of green (apps) and this huge spread of orange (other). I've been experiencing other in increasing and decreasing amounts, but never like this! I am restoring the iPod as I write this, but I would like to know what might have caused this and how to prevent it from happening again.

You could browse the iPod's contents in Finder - perhaps there is some data files or other movies etc.
Also try emptying the trash when the iPod is connected - if you deleted something but didn't empty it, that space isn't freed yet.
