iPod?

My friend wants to buy an iPod for his PC but he doesn't want to spend a lot so he wants to buy a 5GB, do you have to buy a PC specific one or will anyone work now?

I think you can download a converter for all the pre-3rd gen iPods to make them work with Windows. You can also convert them back.

First generation iPods were not made to work on PC's. There are 3rd party apps (MacOpener & Ephpod) which together will get a first generation iPod to work on a windows PC. MacOpener, when i used it one year ago, was about $50 USD while ephpod was freeware at that time (i don't know if either of these things changed).

The only reason you can't convert a first generation ipod to FAT32 to natively work with windows is because there is no software updater for first generation iPods that work with windows. (which would enable you to simply hit 'restore' and it would convert the file system from HFS+ to FAT32)

So your friend wouldn't be looking for a pc-formatted 5gb first gen iPod, just a 5gb first gen iPod. He will need those two programs mentioned earlier to get the iPod to work with windows.

Hmm, that was my impression, but then when I looked on Google it seemed to suggest the opposite

I'd have to say google is wrong, for the simple fact that Apple made no software updater for the first generation iPod to run on windows. Without this, there is no way to make a first generation iPod Fat32 (it cannot read HFS+).

Stupid Google. Just kidding, i don't know what i'd do without it!
