Is there a way to make ANY window zoom expand to full?

I'm awesome...seriously..
A while back when I converted from Windows to OS X something that bugged (and still bugs) the everliving crap out of me was that application windows won't take up the whole screen without me meticulously dragging the corners to the edges and with dual screens it's even more trouble to keep in from hanging over to the other screen. The problem comes when I've got 10 different apps open and am constantly opening and closing new windows it gets to be a pain when things are neat. I know some programs have the option to "Zoom" the window but most don't zoom that well to take up the full screen space. Basically I'm just looking for a way to make ANY window zoom to take up the whole screen area.

I vaguely remember Cmd+Zoom would perform this function in OS 9; but it doesn't work in OS X.

The thing is, the way the OS works means that such a Zoom isn't required (although personally, I'd like it in Photoshop sometimes), since a window only zooms to the size required to show all the window contents (or as much as permissable) at once.

I know there's an AppleScript for Safari which does this.
