Is there a way to manually mount the iPod as a firewire disk?

I am the law!
I know you can check the box in iTunes to make the iPod stay mounted as a firewire disk... but is there a way to go into firewire disk mode manually without iTunes? Like a button combination that you can hold in while plugging the iPod in?

What if you have a bunch of music on the iPod but you want to plug it into another mac without erasing the music thats on it?

Also, is there any way to make an iPod act as a firewire disk on a PC? we use pcs in 3D modeling and it would be nice to save my projects to my iPod and bring them home to my mac [i'm guessing no].

Dunno about your first and third requests... but as to number 2...

When you plug your iDisk into a foreign Mac, OS X politely asks you something in the vain of "Would you like to synchronize with THIS computer and erase, or keep your music from the other computer?"

U can't use iPod for Mac on a PC as hd is formatted as unix or mac FS, so pcs can't read it.
