Is update to OS X 10.4 OK?

I just bought a Powerbook G4 and I am considering upgrading the system, currently OS X 10.3.9 to OS X Tiger 10.4. The guy I bought it from thinks I shouldn't do it because the hardware is too old and doesn't meet the necessary requirements. Is it true and what are the risks, if any?
The processor is 867 MHz, 1MB L Cache, Memory 1GB SDRAM, Bus speed 1 MHz.
I have a Pc and am not familiar with Mac yet, moreover, I am not an expert in computers, far from it!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Izzy

Your PowerBook meets the requirements for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard if you want to make the jump. It'd probably be faster than Tiger, even though you can't upgrade beyond 1GB of memory. Either way, you need to find a retail (black) copy of the install disc.
