Isn't there a way to login so that all you have is a command prompt...

you can start up in single-user mode or verbose mode by hitting apple-s or apple-v respectively. Not sure if this is what you want though... more info here

If you have the login screen where you type in a username (instead of picking from a list) then I think you can type "console" or something like that to log into a console mode.
