Hi guys.

Can anyway shed any light on this.. I have planned a trip to New York from London next month and wanted to take advantage of the shops!!! Also I want to buy/have a look at anything Apple related too.
A friend has told me that it is illegal to use the Itrip in the UK.

Is that right?

Did your friend also tell you why it should be? It doesn't make any sense to me. It's like forbidding any radio-hifi in the UK.
However, I read reports police in the UK told ppl to not use the ipod (white) headphones since there is a very high stealing rate on ipods and the nice white headphones are the best hint you are carrying such.. However, this was just a recommendation and not an interdiction. Maybe your friend confused it with that report?!

I think it is illegal to use itrips in the UK, reason being. The itrip broadcasts the sound from the ipod over FM radio waves so you can tune your car radio in to it. To be able to broadcast FM radio waves in the UK you need to pay for a license. Hence using a itrip without a license is illegal in the UK.

However if your driving around using it in your car I can't see how anyone would be able to / bother to track you down and prosecute you.

UK law-makers say that the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949 forbids the installation or use of radio equipment in the UK unless a license has been granted by the Secretary of State, or a licensing exemption applies. Attempts to gain such permission for iTrip have failed, according to Macworld UK.

OK Guys thanks so much for all that info...
I guess I will hve to decide what to do now i have all this knowledge.

The are _not_ seen legal, as said, but as long as you use it for strictly for your own, private, non-commercial, not a pirate-radio use, and you don't import tens of them to be sold, it is not seen very badly. (I did ask that around in UK). (by the way, you can find iTrips sometimes in UK as well, in ebay, some Indian alectronic stores etc).

Driving and talking to your mobile phone (in UK) is considered worse.
Or importing a huge pile of DVDs that are yet unreleased in UK (as one example, Finding Nemo was released here in early November, before the cinema release in UK). ;) Have fun in US!

PS. Ask if any of your friends want an iPod or iPod mini - you might buy one and sell it for your friends .. iPod release date and price are STILL uncertain for UK and Europe.

Thank you so much for this Giaguara. And thanks for wishing me a fun trip to US. I cannot wait to go! I have been wanting to visit US since I was a kid and New York has been a dream of mine go to visit! And I will be there at the end of the month! Whoo hoo!

I will probably buy the iTrip, i want it for my car. It just opens up so many more possiblities for my iPod.

Agaion thanks all for the response. Macosx.com is the best!

Cheers Kriz London

Yeah welcome to Blighty - its the home of the brave but it sure ain't the land of the free. You need half a milllion for a house and a license to blink.
