iTunes 4 varies the sound volume is there anyway to control this?

i was wondering is it normal for iTunes 4 to alter the sound volume of the song depending on the loudness of the song and can this be fixed?:(
 
Do you mean that it lowers the volume of songs that are louder and ups the volume of songs that are quieter?

If so, you probably want to un-check the "sound check" option under preferences>effects.

(I'm actually looking at iTunes 3 right now. The location may have changed. )
