i was wondering is it normal for iTunes 4 to alter the sound volume of the song depending on the loudness of the song and can this be fixed?
iTunes 4 varies the sound volume is there anyway to control this?

Do you mean that it lowers the volume of songs that are louder and ups the volume of songs that are quieter?
If so, you probably want to un-check the "sound check" option under preferences>effects.
(I'm actually looking at iTunes 3 right now. The location may have changed. )
