So, iTunes 7 and the new iTunes Store has movies.
These movies (supposedly) are encoded with Dolby Pro Logic 5.1 audio.
Now, how do you access this audio?
I have purchased two movies. The Incredibles, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Two movies of recent release that I would expect to have advanced audio with them. My intel iMac (Early 2006) has an optical digital output, connected via an optical digital cable, to an optical digital receiver which can handle Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic 2, and DTS.
When movies are played, analog stereo audio is all I get.
Analog stereo audio is what I usually get from the iMac, with the exception being playing DVDs that have digital encoded audio. DVD Player is set to stream encoded audio via the Digital Out port, so that has and does work fine. My receiver has picked out Dolby and DTS encoded DVDs easily in the past, and they sound great.
Now, iTunes has no such setting. I've futzed with the Sound preferences and the Audio MIDI Setup panel, but I have not gotten anything more than standard stereo out of the iMac when playing these iTunes movies.
One thing that bothers me is that when I open the movies in Quicktime and view Movie properties, the audio track appears to simply be two channel AAC stereo, and nothing else.
Am I missing something, has Apple pulled the wool over our eyes, or is everything working the way it should? I'm at a loss and I hope others can share experiences and compare notes, console me and tell me it'll be okay, or just tell me I'm a lunatic that expects too much.
Thanks!
