iTunes crashes

My iTunes crashes every time I try to launch it.
I am using a 900mhz iBook G3.
A few of things may have contributed this.
I had updated the OS from 10.2 to 10.3.9 before it started to crash.
I tried, unsuccessfully, to use a Firewire hub, it failed to be recognized by the OS.
My iBook's logic board failed and needed repair (4th or 5th time).
I have over 7,500 songs, so I don't want to have to delete the Library and reload the CDs one by one again.
Now my iBook will not recognize the Firewire port.
My iTunes Library is on an outboard Firewire/USB hard drive.
I can locate the iTunes Library via the USB cable and play my music using QuickTime Player.
I think that iTunes can't find the correct path to my Library and crashes.
My OS 9 iTunes launches and plays a few files stored on the onboard hard drive.
When it crashes, a request for me to send a crash report dialog box appears. I sent a few, with no replies.

Well, sounds like you have more than one problem here.

The first thing to do is to back up and then remove your iTunes preferences file, which should be at /Users/[yourusername]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist. Try just dragging it onto the desktop, for example.

This should have the effect of making iTunes generate a new preferences file when you start up. The good news is that it won't try to access the drive through the bad firewire port, and should start up okay. The bad news is that it won't know where your iTunes music library is, and will probably start with the "Welcome to iTunes!" dialog.

See if you get this far; if so, you should be able to move your music library to a stable place, and get iTunes to recognize that place as the library location. Let us know if you get past the first step successfully, and then we can try to hack through the rest of this.

Not that it's a "hack"; I just migrated data from an old laptop to a new one, and used this method for migrating the iTunes library.

The fact that your iBook won't recognize the FW port is a bigger problem, and one that it sounds like you'll need to fix eventually.

I tried moving the iTunes preferences to the desktop, launch the program, I get the licensing agreement dialog box, I agree to the agreement and the program starts up and crashes.

Make sure you actually delete or rename com.apple.itunes.plist from the Library folder in your user folder (that is, your home folder). Has it been deleted?

I second CJ MAC OSX IPOD's recommendation of reinstalling iTunes. Get the latest version. It won't overwrite your tunes.

BTW, Backup your music files the first chance you get.

Let us know how it works out.

Doug
