iTunes File Corruption

Just stumbled across a MAJOR problem when using iTunes.

I recently processed a ton of AIFs to m4a files using Compressor. Compressor actually converts them to MP4 files, but you can tell it which extension to use. I chose m4a because iTunes doesn't seem to properly manage the MP4 files (won't sync them to the iPod, just ignores them, even though they play fine in iTunes).

I chose to let iTunes Keep My Folders organized and to Move Files Upon Import (preferences, advanced). The resulting transferred files (to Users/Me/Music/ITunes) somehow get corrupted and will not play in any application and cause virtually all apps (Quicktime, Peak, Cubase, iTunes) to crash!!!!

Any thoughts?

I have narrowed it down a bit. Corruption happens only after a file has been tagged in iTunes with Composer/Album/Year/etc. data.

It corrupts m4a files, but not aif files.

I just trashed all related iTunes prefs and still have this problem.

DANGEROUS!

Is it just my system?
