iTunes 'forgetting' track names

On my brother's Powerbook G4 when he double clicks a track in iTunes the track name disapears and is replaced by the track number (ie. Track 09). This only occurs on some of his tracks and not all of them. I think it might be due to the fact that he ripped the CD without a web connection then got the track names when he had a connection, would this cause this to happen?

Last night I removed his preferences file so a new one was created but this did not fix this problem which is what the apple store suggested.

Anyone else experienced this problem?
