iTunes Hijacks RealAudio files....

Trying to listen to music samples on the J.W. Pepper page. Click on the Real Audio link and iTunes launches and sits there.

Now, I know that iTunes cannot play RealPlayer files, but I do have RealOne (the Real Audio player for OSX). I also have IE set up to use RealOne to play all files in the .rm and .ram format. Unfortunately, IE hadn't gotten the message, as it still launches iTunes to try to handle the files.

I have confirmed the settings in IE. The only setting in iTunes version 3 is a button to "Set" iTunes to play internet audio. NO option to disable this "feature".

So what am I to do? Just download all the .ram pointer files and then manually open with RealOne? This is obsurd.....

try this:

crtl + click a .ram file
click show info
select "Open with Application" from the drop down list
choose "Real One" from the application list
then click "Change All"

Been there, done that...

If I double click downloaded .rm or .ram files, they do open with RealOne.....

But when IE downloades a .rm or .ram file, iTunes is launched....

simple...

• open IE
• click Explorer -> Prefrences (the menu)
• under the "Receiving files" sub section click "File Helpers"
• in the "File Helper Settings" pane on the right hand side find and select the .ram MIME type
• then click the "Change" button
• then in the "Handling" sub section, choose "Open With Application" from the drop-down-list
• click the "Browse" button and then choose the RealOne Player!


now IE should open .ram downloaded files automatically with RealOne !!

That was the first thing I did. I have subsequently gone back to double check the settings and they are set up correctly to use RealOne to play them....
