iTunes sharing question?

All my music is on my desktop machine, but I want to access the music via my laptop from other rooms in the house. I can switch sharing on and everything works as expected providing I switch off the OSx firewall.

The question is, can I share between these 2 machines without dropping the firewall? Can assign a port, and if so how do I connect via the laptop?

Cheers

If you mean OS X's built-in firewall, the option should already be there for you. In the Firewall tab of the Sharing preference pane, check "Personal File Sharing". On my machine, there's also a separate option for "iTunes Music Sharing". I've never used this feature, but it's available in iTunes's preferences. It might be simpler than file sharing.

If you're using an external router, try forwarding ports 548 and 427 to your desktop machine.

Hi Mikuro

I already have both "personal file sharing" & "share my music" in iTunes pref's enabled. The problem is that it doesn't work, so long as the firewall (on the desktop machine) is switched on.

Work's fine without the firewall.

EDIT.

I just checked Apple's site for port numbers (here), and manually entered the correct port number. Now it works.

:D
