Java problems in Snow Leopard

Since upgrading to 10.6.1 I have had problems with access to web pages using Java, the most important ones being the banks. I get a message in the lower left corner of Safari that AppletDetectorAppletNotinitiated.

The same happens in Firefox. Activating the console in Java, I see that the "detector" is not loaded when Java contacts the bank. The bank tells me that their page works well with MacOS 10.6.1, and that I have to contact Apple to get this fixed.

I have a suspicion that there is a Font problem, although I have deactivated duplicates and deleted fonts marking error. In the Java console, the font is invisible, i.e. it has the same color as the background, but copy and paste to the text editor makes it completely visible.

On some pages Safari shows garbled text, example can be seen here:

It is really urgent for me to have this problem fixed, help will be highly appreciated.
