I just purchased a 19-inch KDS Radius LCD from Sam's Club for $699 + tax. Considering Apple wants $994 for a 17-inch LCD, I think the KDS Radius LCD offers good value. The display is BIG and is crystal clear. After runing the Apple Display Calibrator the screen looks almost like the 17-inch CRT I still have.

The display has a 500:1 contrast ratio, analog and digital inputs, and has settings for "PC" and "Mac".

If you've got some money to burn, this is a good buy for the money. Now I just have to wait one more year for the new PowerMacs w/ IBM PowerPC 970.

I've had both a KDS 19" Avitron and a 19" Xtreme Flat CRT.

My 19" Avitron went to crap in less than a year. The Trinitron tube became blurry and distorted. The Avitron has since been discontinued so my monitor was replaced with a new Xtreme Flat CRT after the two refurbished Avitrons they sent me were worse than the original. My Xtreme Flat is not nearly as nice as a Trinitron tube and is already showing signs of distortion.

Needless to say, I've decided KDS monitors are so cheap because they are crap. Next time I'll spend the money and buy something name brand. Hopefully you'll have better luck with KDS than I have had. I would not recommend them to anyone.

We had Planar LCDs at my summer job, they are very nice. Planars are reasonably priced, you can get a 15'' for 309 at tigerdirect.com (sorry, but no DVI) It has a 400:1 contrast ratio and 300 nits brightness if I remember correctly. I'm saving up to buy one for college, and I asked for tigerdirect gift certificates for christmas :D

The 17'' is 509 and can be found Here
I think it has DVI

Hope your display doesn't go crap on you chemgeek :p
