Kernal Panic after 10.2.6 Combo Update

Hi All,

I'm a newbie to iMacs, and I have this B/W G3 machine with standard perpherials. I have this 'kernel panic' problem after I installed the 10.2.6 combo update for my "clean fresh just installed out of the box OSX 10.2".

Here is what I did, formated and clean installation of OS X 10.2, installed 10.2.6 combo update, restarted and it just hangs at the grey apple logo screen with the spinning line ball animation.

In the verbose mode it says something like IOUSB, IOUSBHIDD, IOGraphicsdisplay!? I forgotten it already, but can anybody tell me what is wrong?

B/W iMac G3 500mhz 256mb ram 20gig HD, Slot CD drive.

Unplug everything except your keyboard and mouse and restart or boot your mac...

Let us know and until then be

Wait, I'm confused. Do you have a blue & white G3 tower, or a blue & white iMac, or a black & white iMac?

Anyway, are you sure it's a kernel panic? When you have a panic, usually you see a box with several languages in it, telling you that you need to restart your computer. This sounds like a bad USB connection. What specifically do you have attached to your computer?

What happens when you boot into safe mode (hold shift) with all your peripherals attached? What happens when you boot into single-user mode (hold Cmd-S)?

Its a blue and white iMac, thats the thing I only have a standard apple keyboard that came with it plugged in.

I assume it comes with a shiny transparent Pro Keyboard(M7803)? I don't know much about macs, I just brought this 2nd hand.

hmm.. no help?
Anyways, before I formated it and reinstall the clean install, I just ran the 10.2.6 combo thats when I got that "multi-lingual - hold power button" message. But I only get as far as the Apple logo now after doing it from a clean installed OS.

Is it my Pro Keyboard? It is the default keyboard which it ships with an iMac G3 right?

Try some of the following:
-Reset your PRAM (you can read in your Mac's manuals about it or even if you search www.macosx.com you will find it)
-Boot from Jaguar CD1 and run the Disk Utility located at the menu (top) of the 1st Install screen... Repair your Mac's disk and permissions

If these will fail :o , let us know :(

Is it possible to revert back to 9.2 for the time being? Would that work at all for you?

Search this site for "kernel panic" and you'll turn up many a post. Browse through them and you should find something useful.

I always want to ask, if you're having these problems with your computer, how are you online asking for help? Obviously, people use another computer... question is, whose? What? Not that important, but something to ask.

yep I did all the PRAM flushing and disk repairings but they dont work..

10.2 does work on its own as a clean install I just cant install any updates to it. Also Software Update crashes when I go and try to download them throu it, so I cant do much system updates, I can just download app updates like iTunes and Quicktime.

Did I brought a lemon?

I know my G4 crashes if I connect my scanner or CD burner and let the system go into display sleep. Crashed today, and the system didn't want to leave the gray apple upon start until i pulled the scanner USB plug today. So nothing but the keyboard and mouse is connected unless I need to scan or burn a CD, then i unplug tthem. If i forget to unplug, I likly crash.

...try to remove the additional RAM (the original should be with 64-128MB of RAM)...

What happens if you hold the SHIFT key (it will enable Safe Boot mode) while starting up your iMac?

Did you try to fsck your HD? You can do that by:
-Holding while starting up your iMac the command(apple)+S keys... Your iMac should start then in text (Unix) mode.
-There type fsck -y and press enter. If this syntax will fail, try this /sbin/fsck -y. Repeat this until the iMac will stop reporting "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED"...
-When it will finish type reboot and press enter...

Also, did you upgraded your iMac's firmware? If not, the firmware is on Jaguar CD1... Install it ASAP!

Arden, also asked you if you can boot at OS 9... If you didn't install OS 9, now is a good time because in order to upgrade your iMac's firmware you should have OS 9 installed!

Let us know what gives... :D ;)

:)

oh yeah I only just added those ram not long ago and I tried this once before but I actully took action and find help on the Internet.

I never done a safe boot tho.. and I never fsck the HD before.. but thanks for the all the help guys.. I have mid terms now so I've decided just to stick to 10.2, cos it works perfectly fine.

But thanks alot again guys! I have given up on trying to update this machine, I'm just going to stick with my PC with the solid W2k OS :>
