Kernel Panics on start-up

I've recently bought a Blue & White G3 from ebay. I have 10.3 on one parition. It 256meg. I'm currently getting kernel panics on start-up. Safe boot works okay.

Have tried resetting nvram. What else do people suggest?

I think the memory might be faulty - how can I check?

One partition? Why have partitions? Especially on that machine with its HD.

Adding ram is one suggestion. 10.3 what? Do you have the latest version? Have you run the Apple Hardware Test that should be on of the discs. Have you tried creating a new user and seeing if the kernal panic happens there as well?
My final suggestion is backup and do a clean install.
 
Hi Ian and welcome to the forum,
faulty memory could be the reason. Is it possible for you to boot into the panther DVD/CD? Did your book ever work proper with the installed memory? Insert the hardware-test CD and check your system. If no error is reported, try to repair permissions or reinstall the system.

Have to be quicker on the draw with me and Arden lurking again. Heck, I even used the create a new user line. ::ha::
 
Since you mentioned my tick on the new user thing, I tried to mention it as less as possible. I will kill you if that gonna fix catandcrows prob! :)
 
If Safe Boots is okay, disable any startup items and see if that helps.

Creating a new user is quick and will let you know if the problem is with the user, or System wide.

This occurs seconds after I restart... What is Sagfe Mode disabling that prevents this?

Any ideas would be great before the hastle of archive + install..

This has happened before... My system seems to mess up every 2 weeks and I would like to resolve it. I've tried Memtest Os x, memory seems okay.

Don't have a hardware-test CD.

Starting up into Safe Mode does three things to simplify the startup and operation of your computer:

It forces a directory check of the startup volume.

It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).

It runs only Apple-installed startup items (some of the items in /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems - and different than login items).

Do you have any USB or Firewire devices connected, other than keyboard and mouse?
 
How about the disk? Is it possible to enter Disk Utility, view the information for your harddisk and see if the S.M.A.R.T. Status is 'Verified'?
 
S.M.A.R.T. Status is 'Verified and I don't have any USB items other than pro-keyboard and mouse.

Suppose I'll have to archive + install when I have time. Pressing C to boot into the 10.3 disk brings up the open firmware, so reinstall is going to be a pain.

This is a real pain - I'll have a read around the net and try some other things.

Could it be you got some faulty panther DVD there? Do you have an earlier version such as jaguar? Just for testing..
 
Actually, Randman, as it happens, my iMac is kernel panicing too. The gray Apple logo appears at startup, then it dies when the spinners appear. But I'm going to wait until I get a new computer to hose it...

By the way, did you get my private message response?
 
Seems good now that I've removed iPodDriver.kext

Weird, eh?

I'll have to save up for a mini mac... :) Cheers for the help guys!
 
No, but I plan to... eventually. The eventuality on which I wait is the replacement of iMac G3 with iMac G5.
