I myself thought the keynote wasnt that bad. I kind of think I'd rather get the iPod mini seeing as I don't have that many songs, it's super small, i like the graphite looking one, and u wont be able to see scratches or finger prints, unlike the big iPod (thats the only thing i dont like about it). Also, im sure u all noticed that the 1984 commercial was edited, the lady had an ipod clipped on :p ! Also, someone just thought of this at mac-rumors.com, maybe the 20th anniversary mac will be the rumored new emac (headless imac) and it will come out january 24th !! - same day the macintosh was reinvented, get it? How cool would that be. Hopefully well be seeing a new update to safari and basically the new iphoto and everything (seeing as new macs have it installed and get free updates) Guess we wont be getting GarageBand for free tho

I didn't turn the keynote on until, oh, 9:36, so I missed the first part of it, but I came on when he was talking about the new Xserves, and all I could think was "It's about time." I think the biggest new thing for me would be Garage Band, though they were having way too much fun up there. ;) The iPod Mini is, IMO, too big and costly to do what it's supposed to do, which is go after the high-end Flash-based MP3 players.

I'm still waiting for "One more thing..."

I still think apple is smart enough to see all of these complaints (this isnt the only site with some) about the price of mini pod so hopefully by the time its supposed to come out theyll change it to $199- which looks like what most people want most, and then if it does well maybe in april/may change it to 179 or 159 for the 4 gb model and come out with a new maybe, 8 gb model? Who knows, i just know they could be kind of cool. G5 xserves do look sweet, and i would love GarageBand so i guess im stuck paying 50 for just it :p ......oh well. This keynote didnt seem to have as much excitement as usual for some raeson tho, but it was still good. Apple's been known in the past to trick everyone and come out with stuff after the keynote, and that hunch about the 20th anniversary mac being the new emac model sure would fit nicely. Now we just have to wait.........
P.S- anyone notice how apple doesnt update their site with much for like 3 to 4 weeks and then they come out with 2 or more things at the same time and its all over the home page :D ? I'm just wating for the new emac and the first g5 powerbooks......... if they have xserves running g5's and all they need is two air holes on the sides that must mean a laptop is in the works!!!

I think Apple should have 1 GB and 2 GB models of the iPod Mini, make them about 3/4 the height, and price them between $100 and $200. If they can manage to sell as many Minis as they do/did full iPods, though, then more power to them.

PowerBooks indeed: the new Xserve is using them 90nm processors! This bodes very well for G5 PB's, I think we'll se them this year. The new 90nm G5 should be a lot easier to cool.

Edit:
The PowerPC G5 is fabricated in IBM’s new $3 billion, state-of-the-art facility in East Fishkill, New York.To get electronics so small requires miniaturization breakthroughs, and IBM’s dedication to scientific research has made these advances possible. With industry-leading build, assembly, and test technology, IBM uses a 90-nanometer process to produce the PowerPC G5. More than 58 million silicon-on-insulator (SOI) transistors and eight layers of copper interconnects enable this new processor to deliver tremendous performance. The use of these advanced technologies also means the PowerPC G5 draws less power and produces less heat—allowing Apple to pack two 64-bit 2GHz processors in a 1U form factor.

I bet those X-serves make a hell of a racket though! Did you see those huge holes at the front? I'm sure we'll see a G5 powerbook but it could still be a good way off. Trying to cool them in a powerbook formfactor must be difficult!

Ah, that's how they did it... they sacrificed a drive bay to add the ventilation ports on the front.

I doubt the new Xserves are much louder than the G5 towers, since they use 8 fans to control air flow. I can't imagine Apple building large holes into a mobile computer, though; there's too much risk of contamination (or invasion).

The only reason people got the idea they should be 199 is becasue of all the rumour sites stating that.

The idea of the iPod is that it's about as small as a flash based player but holds a lot more. The idea is the same with the Mini Cooper. It's expensive, but small. Why wouldn't you get a bigger car for the same price? Because that's not what the Mini is about. It's about style and size, and in the case of the car, nostalgia.

I was just thinking about it - do all of u really think there will be a new emac in the next two months? If u think about it the emac is the snow imac only with some differences, and ud think apple would want to get away from that design........... and also would they make it a headless imac like people think? Whats all of ur thoughts?

I think the eMac is already a great little machine for what it is, and I'm not sure how they would really improve it. Of course, I bet everyone who thought highly of the original iMac design said the same thing. ;)

After using one of the iPod minis today, I think I know why it costs so much (at least compared to what we think it should cost). Sure, there's the form factor like the Cap'n was talking about, but there's also the physical design. The iPod mini uses a scroll wheel that is basically a trackpad, except you can click it. Now, everyone on the inside has been saying that this is a patent-pending technology, so I don't know how much of it Apple copied and how much they innovated, but it seems like it would take a lot of money to develop a technology like that that's as functional and stable as on the iPod mini. And, naturally, stuff that costs more to develop retails for a higher price. So we may think the price is high, but the cost of production may be high as well.

Or it could just be the form factor.
