LaserJet 4000 woes

This problem has been plaguing me for a while...

I have an Indigo iMac 350 MHz with 320 MB RAM. I am trying to print to an HP LaserJet 4000 over an ethernet network. I have turned off AppleTalk on the printer and specified a manual IP address.

In Mac OS 9, I setup an IP printing desktop printer and of course specify the 10.0.0.X IP address.

In Mac OS X, I go to add a new printer in the Printer Setup Utility and am presented with a whole slew of options. At the bottom of the list is "hp IP Printing", but neither the Auto nor the Manual tab brings me any luck (neither the 4000 nor a 5100 show up at all).

So, I go back up the list and choose the 'regular' IP Printing option. I then have the following 4 options:
• Rendevouz
• LPD/LPR
• Internet Printing Protocol
• Socket/HP Jet Direct

The only option that has ever worked for me is the Socket/HP Jet Direct option. I type in the IP address of the LaserJet 4000, specify the correct print driver (HP LaserJet 4000 Series), and click Add.

The printer is then added to the list. At this point I rename the printer (which is now simply named the IP address) so a FileMaker plugin will work correctly. It is renamed to LaserJet 4000.

The problem:
Nothing seems to get through when I print from FileMaker. I have managed to print from TextEdit, which is strange.

In the past, this problem affected certain accounts on this 10.3.5 iMac. I updated the computer to 10.3.7 hoping the problem would be solved, but I continue to have difficulty printing to the silly printer...

What protocol does everybody else use to connect to HP printers? What am I doing wrong?
