As captivating as the subject line is, I don't know what those figures may be. Has anyone heard what the latest iPod sales figures might be? Apple sold 125,000 in the first 60 days, but it's been more than 90 days since those figures have been released.

Considering Apple held the line on pricing on the 5 GB model when they introduced the 10 GB one, I'd say that's a pretty good indicator that sales haven't dropped off. As a result, I'm guestimating sales of about 350,000 to 400,000 iPods to date. That could be as much $160 million in extra revenue that Apple didn't have last year!

Does anyone know how this compares to competitors like Rio and Archos? What are the numbers for the non-iPod MP3 player that sold the most? I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is outselling competitors by a magnitude of an order or more, but any hard figures would be appreciated!

Just thought I'd say this:

I was off to class today, and when I walked through the dining hall, I heard some people talking about the iPod, and how you can actually connect it to PCs and use it. Of course, I already knew that, but it was just the fact of a bunch of people talking about the iPod that's so exciting.

:D :D :D

P.S. Only about 5 people out of 80 or so use Macs in my dorm. :( Well, I guess it's their fault if they choose to use PCs.

Let us be the enlightened elite. Imagine all those Wintel trolls using Macs...buaaaah.....
(I can say that, I was such a Wintel troll for many years :D )

I have to say that the iPod completely fits Apples product line. It's simple, elegant, powerfull and simply has no flaws. I have to say I am still impressed by Apple's design! Since I switched to Apple, the only design flaw I ever saw on Apple computers was the short cable of the first Apple Pro Mice (making them unusable for right-handed iBook owners) and the ethernet- and modem-ports of the current TiBook...everything else is just a dream to use...

5 out of 80 is not bad - that's 6.25%. If Apple had that kind of domestic and global marketshare right now, a lot of analysts would be picking up their jaws from the floor.

Out of curiosity, how many of those 80 people have iPods vs. other MP3 players?

My colleague, who is a fanatic BIOS-hacking XP user, just ordered an iPod from the Apple Store. The product is so convincing that he's betting on XPlay to work before they even finalised their app. So I'm sure that sales figures will hit 1 million by MacWorld NY 2002!

I'm still sooooo happy with my 5Gig iPod

Ciao

I feel so Podless :(

I would buy one, but I think the fear of it just getting to be an old thing after a week is what is stopping me. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I knew that we'd keep getting more features, like games and calandars and TV remotes and newton emulation and quicktime 6 mpeg 4 support and a web browser :D

I'm going to order my 10 GB iPod tomorrow!!!! !WHIIIIEEEE!!!!

I had fear for that too, but i thought by myself: you can't wait forever.
And the fact that you can update the iPod is wonderful. I think that the iPod only will change in capacity. There'll be new software for the iPod soon, but you can update your "old" ipod with the iPodupdater eh? EH? (let's hope so..)

So i'm going to buy that goddamnthing tomorrow!!!! OHYESBABY.

I'm in the camp that thinks Apple will focus on keeping the iPod primarily as a music player, not a PDA. As such, I consider the following to be very likely upgrades to the iPod this year:

*20 GB model
*64 MB of flash memory instead of the current 32 MB
*15 hour battery life (higher capacity batter, more flash memory, and refined electronics)
*Upgraded software to support MoodLogic-type functionality and more automated playlist options

The following are also definitely in the realm of possibility, but more improbable, in my opinion:
*Color LCD (so you can watch iTunes-like Visualizers while playing (now that would be cool in the dark!)
*Sound In/Audio Record
*AM/FM receiver

Improbable, but absolutely killer:
*XM digital satellite radio receiver (I'm not sure they can get the electronics minaturized in time, but this would be a killer feature. Imagine the iPod being the TiVo/ReplyTV for music! Apple could even form a partnership with Sirius to split subscription revenue for the digital radio service - it would be a killer revenue stream!)

I still have my doubts about official Windows support. Apple's research may be showing that the iPod is actually acting as enough of an incentive for borderline Windows users to cave in and buy a Mac. I can see how it's easier for a typical Windows users to defend a platform switch by saying, "I wanted an iPod so I got a Mac" than any other reason. Besides, half the iPod's wonderful experience is its hooks to OS X and iTunes, which can't be duplicated on Windows very easily. Apple would have to begin distributing Windows versions of iTunes, which would undermine their digital hub strategy. That's why I think we haven't seen or heard of Windows support from Apple yet.
