Have had my G4 (400 MgHz) for over 2 years. A dude at the Apple store here in Victoria said in order for me to use the 17 inch lcd monitor, I will need to have a video card installed. Is this true? He also said the 15 inch lcd would work but not the 17 inch. Is this guy treating me like a fool?

Don't know about an LCD monitor, but my 17" Apple Studio display works with my G4/400 PB.
 
The 400MHz;

Depending on the exact Mac model, the guy is probably right. The older machines had SVGA display connection. The newer displays need a ADC connection.

Now, I don't know why he recommends the 15" over the 17".
