Linksys and Air Port Problem

Well I am new to the apple world, got a new powerbook a couple of days ago.

My problem is that I can't get my Linksys Wifi Router and Airport Extream to work.

What keeps happeing is I can get the airport to get on my network with the Wep Encryption and the MAC filtering. But what keeps happing is that the IP address isn't on my network. I keep getting 169.XXX.XXX.XXX. I don't know why this is happening. I have updated all the software on my router and the card.

If anyone could help me. It would be really helpfull.

Oh yeah I am running Pather 10.3.1.

You need to tell us the setups you're using - The linksys is connected to a DSL/cable modem on its WAN port? The linksys is providing IP addresses as DHCP server? You input the WEP in your airport setup using $ prefix for hexadecimal? Your laptop is set to configure via DHCP?
(the 169 IP address means "not connected or configured")

Well my set up is this

DSL Modem - 4 port Linksys Router using DHCP - 4 Port Linksys Router with Wifi DHCP turned off.

that is how my network is setup.

Do you have to use $ even after you updated the Airport software?

And if I have to do I put that in the password part for example:

$HexWepKey

Hope that help if you need more info please tell me..

Thanks in advance.

Yes, put in the $ in the password part like you showed above.
So, if not using DHCP on the LAN side of your router, are you using the reserved IP numbers in the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x ranges for the router and the computers? and how about DNS servers?

Yea I am using the 192.168.x.x. The first router is asigning the numbers to the wifi router. An I am not runing a DNS server.....

Oh, I didn't understand that there are two routers - why have two? This _should_ work. First, make the wireless the first one - it has four wired ports, too? (and make it the DHCP server) Then if you need the second router to act as a hub, DO NOT use the WAN/internet input port. Plug into the client ports only. (turn off DHCP server on the second router)

Seems like we are both confused right now.. Let me explain with more detail.

Ok I have 2 routers, one is a basic router with 4 ports, it is connected to the DSL modem and assigning the DHCP. The Wifi router w/4 ports the DHCP is turned off acting as a hub. The two routers are connected through client ports.

This is the setup from the begining, I have tested the the wifi is working with other wifi cards. I used my friends Alienware with built-in wifi and it works fine with the assigning of IP numbers to my network with WEP, no SSID boardcast, and MAC filtering.

But when I try to get the airport to try to connect to my wifi, it doesn't assign the right IP numbers to the card. I have put in all the right information to the Laptop. I have also put the MAC address, in my wireless router. So in all rights my wifi should be working, but it doesn't.

I have tried everything in my knowledge to get it to work. I even updated the Airport software, and my fireware on my linksys wifi router.

Also the reason, why I have two routers is I had a regular router at first, then I bought a G wifi router on amazon for $60 new. At first I replaced the old one with the new one. But the new one wouldn't connect with my ISP right, so I decided to use the wifi router as just a hub.

I hope that explains everything.

Thanks for taking your time helping me too. Hopefully this is more clear.

If the first Router has an Uplink port, make sure the second Router is connected to it.
