DSL

router/firewall--ethernet----g5

wireless---pc laptop

Any observations or recommendations?

I have Netgear and Dlink switches and hubs in my (mostly) Mac network.
No problems so far.

My router/firewall/server is a FreeBSD box so I have not tested any standalone router.

Just make sure that you buy a router that can be configured without special WinTel software. Preferably via a Web Browser.

gumse,
thanks! only reason i ask is because i remember somebody telling me that one of the manufacturers wasn't all that mac friendly.

Links is very easy to setup. You use a web page. Works on either a Mac or PC.

I have a SMC Wireless Barricade router I got around christmas, and recently it started dropping out sporadically and all I can do to fix it is restart it and wait 5-10 minutes, seems to be just a low quality router. I'm gonna try and reinstall the firmware, but I doubt that will do anything.

I've got a Netgear running right now! It works really well with AirPort in my G3 iBook...it can reach really far, infact I can go sit outside and still be browsing the net!

Setup is instant, no software or anything, and it's cheap too! :)

Yeah, my little SMC box combined with a linksys 802.11b (PCI?) card in my dad's pc the signal drops from very high when the two are 10 feet apart to very low when they are 25 feet apart and there are two walls between them. Again, I think it's just a low quality box because I've never heard anyone complaining about how their linksys card sucked, and the router has been cutting out on me recently.
I wouldn't recommend SMC.

thanks for the help! I went out and get a linksys etherfast cable/dsk router befsr41. Only setup gotcha was to make sure the mac networking was setup to grab the dchp not from PPPoE but from dchp. Other than that it's working well so far!
