Hm - I don't think that one has anything to do with Apple rumors or discussions.
Not much with hardware either, but at least it's a bit closer than the Apple related discussions...

First, I don't think it has anything to do with Mac OS X...
If your Dell Dimension 3000 is running currently XP, are you planning to install Puppy Linux on that hardware?
If so, the Puppy Linux (or whatever other version of Linux you are looking for) should contain the drivers, OR the distro should contain instructions for locating the drivers.
But - if you mainly use your XP, why not use just some virtualization software to run the Linux distro as a virtual machine? That way you don't need no stinking drivers for it.
You could use e.g. VMware Server or Player for that - both are free.

Jim, one curious thing about Macs that many Windows users don't think is the resell value. So if the first time you get a Mac it costs a bit more, once you go Mac it's not always more. So if you sell your e.g. 2-3 year old Mac when you want to upgrade to a newer model, you will get much better value for your second hand Mac than you'd get for a used PC. Also there's no harm in starting with a 2-3 year old Mac either (anything that is with an Intel processor so you'll be more future proof with future updates and upgrades would do). And there's also the Mac Mini which isn't that pricy either.
So perhaps when you'll be looking at an upgrade next, that could be something to consider...

I've gone there when I've needed some answers with issues on Slackware that I couldn't resolve on my own. They also have a subsection that's divided by distribution, so you can pose your Puppy Linux question in the respective subsection.

I would pick a model with an intel processor though (basically anything that's been released in the past 4 years would do).
Desktop? Mac Mini would probably be a safe bet (if you have a display, keyboard, mouse etc you could use with it) and it's the least expensive.
For all in one desktop, iMac wouldn't be bad either. Those are also very easy to sell again after you'll upgrade later (basically all Macs are).
Portable? MacBook for more portability and cheaper price, or MacBook Pro for more screen and fancier features. Of the laptops I'd probably start with MacBook though.
Mac Mini is actually very mini as a desktop. I've flown a few times with a Mac Mini in the hand luggage in a plane - when I had my laptop(s) in the same luggage.
So you could also use in multiple locations - as long as you have all the other accessories in the other location too (home/work for instance).
