Local Ip..

Im on an airport exrteme network, and my local IP is always somewhere between 10.0.1.1 and 10.0.1.9.

Is there any way to CHANGE my local IP, or force it to always be the same?

You should be able to specify a range in your Airport basestation or Airport Express for DHCP. If you set the computer with the local IP to a local IP that's not within that range, then you'll be OK. You could also just disable DHCP and configure them all manually. Just make sure you adhere to the proper subnetting or else they won't talk to one another.

The DHCP configuration would be through the Airport Admin Utility, since you're going to be changing the range of dynamic addresses that are being given from the Airport itself. As for the static IP, that would be on your Mac, so it would be in the Network pane under System Preferences.

From the first picture, you need to have it set to use NAT and DHCP. This way, the basestation acts as a router instead if a bridge between the public internet and your private network.

It already was that by default.

When I choose it, the IP range beginning and ranged end boxes are greyed out.

If I change my local IP in network prefs, I cant connect to the internet.. Hmm.

Does it allow you to specify the IP range for the Airport settings (which would be for the wireless)? If you were to change the DHCP setting under the Internet tab then you wouldn't be able to get the dynamic address assigned to you from your ISP (which is what you're saying).

The idea is that you want the Airport to dish out DHCP for the internal network (and you would assign a range of internal addresses to be dished out).

It allows me to specify if I put it on the second setting, "Share a range of IP addresses, Useing DCHP Only

OK, so I wonder if you are not solving the wrong problem the wrong way here. Do you just want your internal IP to always be the same? And you don't care about your external Adelphia IP?

If the answer to both questions is yes, then you can just configure your machine to use an IP greater than 10.0.1.20 (based on the screen shots you provided). You will also need to set the gateway and DNS info statically but you can get this by just copying what DHCP gives you. (I suspect it will be 10.0.1.1 in both cases.)

You airport will still relay the traffic it just will not give you an IP out of its pool of dynamically assigned addresses.

Yes and yes. (Woot)

Whenever I change my local Ip, (System Prefs - Network - Airport - DCHP Useing manual address) I cannot connect to the internet.

Probably because the airport is not giving you a gateway address or proper DNS servers. I would configure it once with just plain DHCP and then write down all the values in the grey text. Then just do the whole thing manually. That should work in general. If you are having problems use Network Utility.app and try to ping some known machines like 10.0.1.1 (your gateway) and 64.233.187.99 (google.com) also try the name servers if you are having name resolution problems.

I guess my point is "I cannot connect to the internet is a bit to vague to select the proper bit of tweaking to fix your problem.

I would configure it once with just plain DHCP and then write down all the values in the grey text.

Did that, same result.

Oo, working now though.

Had to take the DNS's server's IP from airport admin util, and put it in 'Dns Servers' on Network Prefs.

Thanks
