two questions here. is it possible to lock the desktop to stop files being put on it. i ask this because is have a lot of trouble telling kids to save all their work in the document folder and they leave their work everywhere.

a solution to this would be to use the simple finder but does this have network support since the connect to server option is missing but is it possible to auto mount a server?

thank you

jon

What you need is something like the old At Ease. That allowed students to open specific programs and the documents were saved in a special spot.

In checking at the Apple's Made 4 Mac I found a couple you might want to check out.

Mac Minder by Luma Code
Baby Safe II by Ricardo Batista
Deep Freeze Mac OS X by Faronics Technologies USA Inc.
Finderella (My First Finder) by Landsbert
KidsMenu by KMac Software
MacPrefect by Hi Resolution, Inc.
FoolProof Security by SmartStuff Software

Depending on the grade will depend on which you select.

Yes. Just browse to the home folder in question, select the icon "Desktop" and choose File --> Get Info... Under the Ownership & Permissions tab, set it to be owned by an admin, and that other users can read only.
You might also want to check out the "permissions" button in the "accounts" preferences. It lets you give the users access to only specific programs, and set other useful settings to protect the system from those kiddies, like simple finder.

You could try adding the server to the login items for that user, then switch to simple finder.

Why not give the kids their own account? This is probably the right way to go for more reasons than just desktop management.

thanx for the help

changing the permission on the desktop has locked it good.

i tried to mount a server in the normal finder then switch to simple finder but all dekstop icons finish. i going to see if there is a way of making it appear in the on the dock on in one of the folders on the dock.

i can't create accounts for all the users because there are far too many. i'm going ot have to set up a server for that side of things
