Log in, immediate log out. crashed?

My password is accepted on log in, however it logs out immiediately after and returns to log in page.
I tried >console to put in my username and password however only my username can be typed in.
Has it crashed? if so / if not what needs to be done?
 
Did you do anything different or special before it started to happen?
Install or delete something? Add software?
Does it happen also in safe boot? (hold shift at boot, more details about safe boot here)
