Login/Software Update

Hello,

I've posted this in another thread, but I'm unsure where this fits in.

My system (powerbook G4, Tiger 10.4.3) hangs at login when I enter my password. Additionally, it hangs when I need to authenticate. Software update does not work -the progrss bar stops and it never completes. Here's where it gets odd: It only happens at home (airport network) and not at work(ethernet connection)

Thoughts? I'm going crazy with this...

Do not create more than one thread about issues. Moderators will put your thread in the right place if you accidentally put it in the wrong place. System & Software seems to be the correct one for this, though.

"Hangs" at login - but _continues_, it seems? Also when authenticating for software installations? Can you connect through Ethernet at home, too, for testing? (Basically put that PowerBook in the base station's place?)

Apologies for the multiple posts...

The system hangs when I enter my password at login, also, it hangs anytime I enter my user password (such as creating a new user)

Software update doesn't work at all. Is it possible it's looking for a server on my works network? I don't have the issues with my other computer (G5) on the home network... just this one.

Also, My web sharing address is:
http://someserver.company.com/~jonpb/
Not computerName.local/~jonpb/

Thoughts???

Thank You...

Oh, yes. Your notebook has probably been configured by a very intelligent network administrator. Go ask him. (You probably have fixed DNS and/or IP entries and your computer tries to find itself or a company host whenever you go do something or other that the computer thinks is network related...)

I think you're probably correct Fryke. How can I determine if this is in fact, the case on my machine?

You'd have to look in the Network preference pane. What's there for Ethernet, what for AirPort etc. Is everything on Automatic or are there actual domain names and/or manually entered IP-addresses somewhere?

Network/(Ethernet (airport off)?:
TCP IP
configured Using DHCP, Ethernet configure: Automatically

Any thoughts?

BTW: Thanks so much

Take a look under directory access (/Applications/Utilities/Directory Access). Under the authentication tab does it say anything other than

/Netinfo/DefaultLocalNode ?

Yes! It says:
/Active Dorectory/All Domains

Could this be from the second admin account on this computer?

Basically, your computer is attempting to connect to an Active Directory server. It can't find the server when you're at home and this is why it is hanging.

There's not a real easy way around this issue other than removing the AD authentication. Do you know why it has to connect to the AD domain? You should speak with who ever set up this machine at work for you. Without knowing the 'why' it's difficult to suggest any alternatives.

That'll probably work, but if you don't disable it before getting off your work's network, you'll have to deal with the hanging until it's been disabled and then only local accounts will work.

I guess what I was getting at (should have been clearer) is that you should find out why you need to be connected to the AD domain. At work do you login with an alternate account that isn't local to the machine?

No. My sense is that it was set up this way without any *real* reason. I use a VPN at home, but that shouldn't affect me there at all...

Disabling the AD service shouldn't affect your VPN login. I'd still speak with your net admin to see why they've configured your computer to use AD.

The good news is, you can give it a try with no adverse affects (as long as you know the local admin username & password, but you'd have to know that to disable it ;)) and turn it back on if you need to.

I already sent him an email inquiring. I've also informed him that this is my issue (potentially) while I'm at home. We'll see...

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Best,

jonp
