Long File Names Question

Is it just me or are long file names not supported for Carbon apps? Or is it app dependent with not all supporting long file names yet?

I notice Apple's TextEdit allows you to save LFNs (long file names), but none of the Office programs do. Same for Indesign 2, Illustrator and Apple's own Final Cut.

Is this a Carbon thing? This is lame by the way. I know I can rename them long in the Finder, but it's awkward and annoying. Is there any hope for this?
 
Carbon applications CAN support long file names, except for the fact that almost no developer has actually programmed their software to do so. Even Apple has been lazy (AppleWorks can't save LFNs). This annoys me too.
