Looking for a CPU upgrade card--Need advice

Looking for progress
Just a quick question

I have a B&W G3 Tower that I am using with Protools LE and an Mbox. Right now it has a 500 Mhz upgrade G3 card in it, and 1 gig of ram.

It runs OS X pretty well, but Protools continues to error about a CPU something-or-other. After many attempts I decided to boot into OS 9 and try out 5.x. Things are working now, but now I have to deal with OS 9...and from someone that came over to Macs for good after OS X was out, OS 9 is pain. But at least things are working, right?

Anyway, I am thinking about an upgrade card for the CPU to see if I can get OS X and Protools 6.x to work on it. From looking around here's what I have found.

PowerLogix makes two cards:

G4 @ 550 Mhz
G3 @ 900 Mhz

They both run about $250, so I am at a loss for what to do. Does Protools use the Velocity Engine? Basically, which would benefit me more?

My other problem is that I don't want to buy one of these only to find out it's not enough juice for the program.

Any thoughts from anyone?

Further, does anyone out there have a B&W (with a G3) running both OS X and Protools 6.x? If so, what the heck do I do to get it going for me?

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions anyone can toss my way.

Later,
Eddie

Thanks for replying Cheryl

I am not sitting in front of the Mac right now, but I will locate the error on the net or recreate it at home tonight and post it.

I have the 6.1.2 update, but nothing helped. I think I am stuck with OS 9 for now, but, as always, have a few more tricks that I want to try before I resign to 9 for good. In the meantime, 9 is working for recording, and that was the important part of getting this system up and running anyway.

Do you use Protools? If so, how long? And what do you use it for? And...if you are using it, are you using it on your iMac?

After getting 9 to work this weekend, I am baffled by what the hell to do with it now. I have never done any recording, computer or otherwise, so I am going about the pick and click method. I am slowly figuring out what NOT to do--mostly the result of some ear-bleeding noise from the speaker system. Slowly but, I think, surely, I will get this thing figured out.

Anyway, thanks for the help. Did you have a thought one way or the other on either the G3 or G4 from my earlier post? Still wondering what people think about that.

Thanks again,
Eddie

No, I have not used Protools. I just checked their web site for you.

As for the PowerLogic cards - Get the G4, but see if they have a higher mHz model. In any case the G4 would be my choice.

The Sonnet cards a nice as well. I put one in my Powermac, no jumpers, etc. Works flawlessly with Panther, etc. Some of the Powerlogix cards had issues with sleep function, etc.
