Hey all,

Sorry if this isn't the right forum to post to. I'm brand new to the Mac community, and I'm looking for some kind of firewire or usb connector to import my Hi8 Video into the Imovie.

Does anyone have any suggestions, preferably the less expensve types.

Thanks!

A couple of options come to mind (none inexpensive, unfortunately). One is the Dazzle Hollywood bridge - has analog and firewire connections. I've heard that it doesn't do that great a job - $299us. Video in/ video out.

There's a similar item on the Apple online store (also vi/vo). But remember that we're talking about not losing frames, so small items like the dazzle dc80, which is like $65 on dazzle.com (only video in), just don't do the job....i've had looooooots of experience with that. I think it's really for still picts...

I would suggest doing a search, but make sure that if it's usb, you stream it or something....bandwidth limitations for usb1, ofcourse...

When I was capturing some video from my new dv camcorder just today - through imovie, it was saving it at the rate of 1mb/sec (72 secs recorded; 72mb big). Ofcourse, that's straight dv....not compressed.

Honestly, i don't know too many options for the mac....since I've only seen items that specifically mention peecees.

Good luck...

Hey there,
Check out the Formac Studio. :D
www.formac.com
Does what you want it to do and a WHOLE lot more. However, it is not what one would call cheap. Coming in at around $400 USD, it's a bit pricing, but totally amazing. I use it for all my importing from VHS and any camera that doesn't have FireWire. By the way, the Formac DOES use a FireWire connection, so importing and exporting back out go as fast as a tape can capture it. It rocks. You can also watch TV on it (if you have a cable run to it--it's got coax in).
Anyway, it's pretty rad--I love that word--so I thought I would just share my experience with it.

Dazzle DVC 80 does audio, and composite and SVHS inputs. For $69.99 at CompUSA.

Formac also has a cheaper version without the TV capability for around $290 I believe. It's called the Studio DV The version stated above is the studio DV/TV
