Lost start up chime

Title says it all. Started about a week ago. I've run Disk Utility & DiskWarrior, but that didn't help.

Several utilities offer the option of disabling the start up chime, but I can't find it to try to disable it and then enable it.

Any ideas?

MBP, 2.gMhz, OS 10.5.4

Have you tried zapping the PRAM or resetting the SMC?

No & WHAT is SMC?

Zapping the PRAM did it! Thanks. (A big head slap on me!)

Glad to hear that zapping the PRAM worked.

As for resetting the SMC, it's the same thing as resetting the PMU on older Macs (some had a button inside on the logic board that would reset it, others would have a specific procedure with the power button). It's just called SMC on the Intel Macs.

In case of need, here are links to Apple's guides for resetting the SMC for:

Hummmm....
Apple says to: "MacBook, MacBook Pro
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer."

I used the old standby opt/cmd/P/R and it worked. Did I FU?

Yup, that's fine, you followed the procedure for resetting the PRAM. Nothing should be broken.

The PRAM and SMC are different entities, so the procedures for resetting them are different. While we're at it, I might as well post Apple's details of how to reset the PRAM too, I suppose!
