Mac Bidouille says iMac G5

found a link on macnews.net.tc to Mac Bidouille's article about a code in 10.3.4 that may have information about an iMac G5 and also an updated Powermac G5

what do you think?

A G5 iMac would certainly be interesting. I wonder about the form factor. And would that mean that a G5 PowerBook is closer, or farther away from seeing the light of day?

Cat: Those are forum threads. We can have our own discussions here (see board rules). ;-)

And Randman: :) :) :) I guess _that_'s one of those 100% rumours. Unless the new iMac would be screen-less. But that'd make it a non-iMac, I guess. ;-)

Well I might be able to try 64 bit computing after all,:D.Although I think I'll let the masses test 'em out in the real world for awhile yet.

There's nothing about the code that says that it'll be an iMac G5, just that it doesn't match any current codes for any of Apple's currently selling machines.

So it could be anything, even a new G5 tower based on the 90nm chips.

That'd be the 7,3 item, Cpt. Code, quite obviously, which is also mentioned. Unless there's going to be a completely new form factor.

OK, yep you're right. I was just going by what I saw on Spymac yesterday.

Even code numbers have been used for iMacs, odd numbers for PowerMacs, hence the new numbers suggest a minor revision for the G5 PowerMac and a major new one for the iMac. The Neo2 codename referenced in the string refers to the 970FX, which we know from the XServe. This makes sense, as it is a new architecture compared to the 970 itself. As suggested a whole time back in an Ars thread (which I am not linking to :) ) it could well be that the plain vanilla 970 is capable of reaching speeds well beyong 2 GHz and could hence, with a minor revision, make the 3 GHz claim true. The 970 FX is ideal for small desktop enclosures, as it dissipates less heat than the 970 and the G4. However, the new code number implies a major change in the architecture of the iMac, which suggests also a new inclosure. It could well be that Steve will announce both the (dual? :D ) 3GHz G5 PowerMac and a new (1.8 GHz?) G5 iMac at WWDC.

And wouldn't it be nice, too. :) ... I wonder whether the iMac will retain the 'whiteness'. It makes so much sense to divide Apple's machines into professional (alu) and consumer (white) that I hope they keep it. Although the iPods kinda defeat this scheme. Unless you look at the mini as the more sophisticated model (it IS more expensive per megabyte) - and the 'normal' iPod is quite certainly a consumer device. (I'm still waiting for a PowerPod, a tiny bit smaller than the iPod and in aluminum.) ;-)

But why would they make it smaller when it's gonna have a colour screen? Don't worry Fryke. I'm waiting for a PowerPod too, but I don't want it to just play Music…
