Mac Finder Problem

I have what I believe is a finder problem. If I click on my USER icon or the PICTURES icon in the home window sidebar, my documents folder opens and I am unable to access the USER or PICTURESs folders. Similarly if I navigate to USER or PICTURE folder through MY COMPUTER, I am taken to my DOCUMENTS folder. I have relaunched the finder to no avail. I have run Techtool Delux and Platinum but they indicate no problems. I'm using OS10.4.11 on an IMAC. Help, Thanks
