mac G5 and Cubase problem.........

hey guys.thanks a lot to dale by the way for helping me along with my last problem. this site can be a real lifesaver. i've got another question. i have a 1.8 gig, single processor, mac G5 with osx-Panther, running a rather demanding collaboration of Cubase SL2 with a Reason rewire {both are music creation programs}.
my usual software set up consists of: Reason and Cubase running together, with around 20 audio tracks running on Cubase, and plugins like pitch fix and final master etc, applied to these audio tracks.
as you can imagine this has began to make recording and playback intolerable, with massive stuttering and distortion. i have tried adjusting the buffer speed and sample rate etc but it just isn’t enough, the problem still remains.
i know you might advise bouncing down sections of audio, like backing vocals, so that there is less running at the same time. but, even when bouncing down, the Yamaha plugins I have {pitch fix, vocal rack etc}, demand so much from my little Mac.
I was wandering if there was anything i could do to help this problem.{does freeing up memory on the hard drive allow it to run faster?}
Thanks again guys.
