mac mail crashes on MBA

hello all

i have been using my macbook air for a week or so and mail seemed to be working fine but now it crashes when i try to read certain new email.

i repaired permissions with disk utility several times and still crash
it also retains the windows opened status at the last startup (not remembering anything i did during the current session leading up to the crash)

anyone else seeing mail crashes - i will try to reinstall from apple disc

any suggestions would be appreciated - i got this airbook to use mostly for email and travel so i find it ironic that this is the only problem i'm having - the trackpad takes some getting used to but it's better than my last laptop - an old titanium powerbook (g4)

Mail.app doesn't crash for me on my MacBook Air, so it's not a commonly known problem or anything. Also, I wouldn't advise to try and reinstall the Mail.app application. If the app were corrupt, it simply wouldn't run. What you might want to try is to get rid of Mail.app's preferences, completely, and re-add the account(s) by hand. That might actually do some good.

Also: It seems like it crashes on viewing certain E-Mail messages. What do those messages contain? Could it be it's simply the inline PDF viewer crashing Mail.app because the files in those E-Mails are corrupt? Can you try *not* to open those mails and see if the crashes happen under other circumstances as well? If you succeed opening Mail.app without crashing, can you close the windows you want to close, quit the app and start it again to see whether it retains such information if it *doesn't* actually crash?

Btw.: It's not ironic that crashes happen where you spend the most time on your MacBook Air, rather it's typical.

Thanks for the quick reply

i have my forum email responses and when i tried to open yours - it crashed - i can change settings in pref and quit and it looks like it is quitting but it give me the "Mail unexpectedly quit" dialog box

so - can you tell me what prefs to delete?

i have an idea but would really like to be sure
