Mac Mail, IMAP, lost emails

I use an iBook G4, OSX10.4.6 and had a lot of email problems with EUDORA and ENTOURAGE (e.g. deleted emails reappearing, the program losing the server etc). I moved to using the MAIL program bundled with the Mac and initially as was well and I was delighted.

I have an IMAP account but from early May all emails I have moved to one of the IMAP folders that I use to store and organise received emails have just disappeared. I can still send and receive mail but I cannot organise it without losing it. I notice that in the ACCOUNTS ADVANCED section the IMAP PATH PREFS says "~/MAIL" instead of being empty and the ACCOUNT DIREC TORY just says "~/Library/Mail" with no mention of the IMAP server.

If this is my problem, how to I alter the settings since the ACCOUNT DIRECTORY IS greyed out and I can't change it????

Without knowing anything about your accounts, I can tell you this: Entourage 2004 synchronizes its message listing at fixed intervals rather than instantaneously. IIRC, the default interval is every ten (10) minutes. If you quit the app before its next synchronization, your deleted messages won't be deleted. They should, however, be deleted when you relaunch the app. I have never used Eudora under MacOS X or with IMAP accounts, so I won't comment on it.

If you keep your messages on your IMAP server, then you will not see them on your computer. You need to be a bit clearer about exactly your IMAP account is configured within Mail.

I want to have my emails on the IMAP account, it is how I have always organised things so that if I have to log on with a different computer I can still see my various mailfolders. This is axactly what MAIL was doing but now it isn't, which surprises me since I have not fiddled with the settings.

My IMAP account is configured with the addresses of the incoming and outgoing mail servers for my institution and that bit of MAIL - sending and receiving works fine. Also on the IMAP account are various mail folders but nothing I have sent to these since mid May are actually shown. In addition on my iBook the Library, mail folder is showing 2 IMAP accounts, very nearly but not quite identical, but I only have one IMAP account so something has clearly upset MAIL. Can you think of anything I can do to resolve this?

re Entourage, I have lost my note of the continuous error number, but what was happening e.g. with deleted or moved emails is that they would almost immediately reappear in the inbox which is really annoying.
