Mac MSN Messenger Issue!

Hi all,

This is my first post. I am a traditional Windows person who is trying to break the mould....

OK I have a Snow iMac G3 700Mhz 512MB RAM 60GB HDD Slot Loading CD ROM....

I am currently running OS 10.3 (Fully updated to 10.3.6 I think) with OS 9.2.2 on the same partition for Classic purposes.

I have managed to get the machine installed and I have adjusted the SMB config in Directory Services to match the workgroup name of my home network. The iMac is now joined to a workgroup which consists of:

My laptop - (Windows XP Pro SP2) just to share files across the network and get internet access from Home machine

Home machine - (Windows XP Pro SP2) running ICS and sharing this to all other computers, as well as file sharing..

The iMac has picked up a IP from DHCP and can browse the net and update itself but for some reason it can not sign into messenger???? What do I have to do to make this work?? Port forward or something.. and if so what ports, I really have absolutely no idea of how to do this...

A few other questions too....

Can an Admin user have access to standard user files and folders or do they belong to the owner only?? Also how can I make something run at startup or during login???

Any help would be appreciated....!

As one user on an exclusively Mac network, I can't help you on the MSN problem, I'm afraid, but getting apps to start, and even getting remote volumes to mount, at start-up/log on is a piece of cake.

In your System Preferences, in the System section, click on "Accounts". If you have more than one user account set up on your Mac, select the one you want to modify from the list in the left-hand window. At the top of the resulting wondow, you will see 4 tabs, one of which is "Startup Items". Click the "+" button at the bottom of that window and navigate to the application/mounted volume you want at startup, et voilà!

There is a radio button to the left of each item in the list in a column called "Hide". Click on that if you want the application to start, but you don't want loads of application windows cluttering your desktop. If you check your dock after startup, you will see that those apps are indeed running, but have been hidden.

Hmmm…

Just a thought – are you trying to access the MSN account that you had set up from your Windoze machine? And if so, has the Windoze machine connected to it? 'Cos you can't have two users connected to the same account.

OK,

Firstly, I am not signed into Messenger on other PC's....

As for the startup or login thing, I would like to create a script which for example empties the trash and place it somewhere where no matter who logged in, it would run the script...

tell application "Finder"
empty trash
end tell

I could just log in as each user and add it to their startup items but there must be a better way than that!

Is there a system preferences file which I could edit to make this work?
