Mac Newbie needs help on networking

Got my PowerBook last Friday; so I haven't had much time to explore it. The network at work uses static IP's and you need to know the computer's MAC address. How do I find my network card's MAC address and how do I set the IP address?

You can find it in one of two ways. Firstly if you have the packaging it came in it will be printed on the label under ethernet ID. If you have discarded this already open a terminal window and type ifconfig and it will list it there.

Change the IP address under System Preferences>Network then select Built-in Ethernet and thenConfigure and enter the settings you need to.

Apologies I was rushing ahead, if you need to know the MAC address it probably means that they are using static IP addressing using dhcp to allocate them. So they should configure their server with an entry for your MAC address and it should then pick it up automatically when it is connected to the network.

Leave the settings on automatical. When you enter the System Preferences -> Network mark Built-in Ethernet (or Airport, if you are using the network wireless) and press "Configure" and pick the last tab "Ethernet". Under "Ethernet-Id" you will find the MAC address.
Good luck!
