Finder quits quite often when I am viewing folders/volumes on desktop. Also working in programs such as Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator and they crash too. Have tried trashing prefs and other. Will I need to re-install OS?
 
How much hard drive space do you have available? Be aware that there is a "10% rule" in regards to how much free space should be available for OS X. Going under that percentage will start to introduce problems. If you can (assuming this is the issue you're experiencing), move any documents you've created over to an external drive in order to free up some space.
