Hello and thanks for reading about my issue.
I recently switched from DSL with an Actiontek to Cable modem and an SMC router. Prior to switching, I could share files between my 2 systems no problem. Now, the systems refuse to see each other even though sharing is turned on and group names are the same - the old mappings I used to "connect a network drive" on the Win XP system fail. The subnet mask is the same - everything appears to be configured correctly.
I can ping the Mac and router from the Win XP system. I can not ping from the Mac - nothing - no IP addr. no web addr. I get the error:
Ping: Socket: Operation not Permitted
My wireless connection on the Mac drops constantly. It drops once in a while on the Win system (which is right next door to the router - the Mac is 1 floor above but less than 60 ft. away).
When I download on the Mac, it's like using dial-up - so slow it's ridiculous.
The SMC router must be defective, I think - but perhaps others here have some suggestions.
Thanks for your time and attention.
